Interstate 29 is a main route for travel through the Missouri River valley in Western Iowa. Few travelors realize that they pass within a few miles of a nation that was old when Lewis and Clark explored the area almost two hundred years ago.

West of the towns of Salix and Sloan, travelers can see a line of high forested hills in the distance on the Nebraska side of the river. These hills and the lands beyond them belong to the Omaha Indian Tribe. The Omaha, though small in number, have made a significant contribution to the history of Nebraska and Native American-government relations.
